James R. Janz concentrates his practice on real property transactions and land use issues. He has been involved in all aspects of real estate law from property acquisition, through entitlements, construction and operation.
Mr. Janz has over 25 years of experience as a real estate attorney. He also is a licensed civil engineer and urban planner, and a LEED Accredited Professional. Mr. Janz has served as the general counsel for a hotel development and operating company, as chief real estate counsel for a major restaurant development and operating company, and had primary legal responsibility for an approximate $1 billion portfolio of commercial real estate assets throughout the United States owned by an investor client.
Mr. Janz’s clients include real estate investors, commercial, residential and hospitality industry developers, and owners in all stages of the real estate development process and ongoing operations.
Mr. Janz is a member of the State Bar of California, the American Institute of Certified Planners, the Urban Land Institute, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He previously served on the Executive Committee of the Urban Planning and Development Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Janz is active in public service, having served twice as the Mayor of Atherton, California, and eight years as an Atherton City Councilman. He also has been an organizer and speaker at land use conferences, and has served as chairman of the Atherton Planning Commission and General Plan Committee.
Mr. Janz was a partner with the Palo Alto firm of Tomlinson Zisko LLP and prior to that was a real estate partner with Pettit & Martin in San Francisco and San Jose.
