Description of Practice

Jean Ryan concentrates her practice on general tax matters, which include tax planning for businesses, as well as tax and estate planning for high net worth individuals.

Ms. Ryan has practiced tax law since 1983, and has a broad tax practice, including corporate, partnership, individual, real estate, gift and estate taxation, with a specialization in advising families and closely-held businesses. She represents U.S. and non-U.S. based families in connection with tax and estate planning and also is frequently involved in business succession planning. Ms. Ryan has represented foreign governments and individual foreign investors in connection with their U.S. investments, venture capital partnerships, real estate investment trusts, real estate management companies, and individuals and closely-held entities involved in a wide variety of domestic and international activities. Ms. Ryan has additional expertise in representing non-profit organizations, including private foundations, public charities and private operating foundations formed by individuals and corporations.

Before joining Sideman & Bancroft LLP, Ms. Ryan was a partner at Morrison & Foerster and before that, a partner at Pettit & Martin.

Professional Involvement

Following graduation from law school, Ms. Ryan served as a law clerk to Judge Harry Pregerson, who was then a Federal District Court judge and who now is with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Ms. Ryan also frequently speaks on tax and estate planning issues to professional groups in this area.
