SAN FRANCISCO, November 7, 2006 — Richard J. Nelson, a partner in the Business Crimes practice at Sideman & Bancroft LLP, has been appointed co-chair of the Computer Crime, Intellectual Property and Trade Secrets Subcommittee of the American Bar Association's White Collar Crime Committee (WCCC) for a two-year term.
The WCCC is unique in its focus on white collar criminal law, its balance of prosecutors and defense attorney members and its national scope. The WCCC routinely studies issues of importance to white collar crime attorneys and recommends appropriate policy changes and initiatives. As co-chair of the subcommittee, Nelson will focus on issues related to computer crime, intellectual property and trade secrets by coordinating public events for ABA members on relevant subjects, preparing member alerts on significant new cases or policy developments, and organizing CLE programs on high tech issues.
Nelson specializes in litigation, focusing on white-collar criminal defense and complex commercial cases. He has represented corporate clients in governmental investigations and individuals charged with white-collar crimes, including bribery, government fraud, and security crime allegations. In commercial litigation, he has handled both trials and arbitration involving complex litigation, including claims of fraud and unfair business practices. He has represented companies in trademark and copyright disputes, both as a defense attorney and as an advocate for the companies to encourage criminal prosecution of violators of IP rights.
Prior to joining Sideman & Bancroft, Nelson was a partner with Sidley Austin Brown & Wood, and he spent five years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S, Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., where he primarily handled criminal prosecution of political corruption and white collar crimes, including fraud and bribery cases. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Georgetown University (1989) and his B.A., cum laude, from Santa Clara University (1981).
