On May 13, 2021, Sideman & Bancroft, LLP will moderate the “IRS Fraud Enforcement and Cryptocurrency Update” for the ABA Tax Section’s 2021 Virtual May Meeting. The panel will be hosted by the Tax Section’s Tax Practice Management Committee, and moderated by Sideman & Bancroft’s Travis Thompson.
The IRS has recently established the Office of Fraud Enforcement (“OFE”) to enhance the detection and deterrence of fraudulent taxpayer activity. The OFE has broad authority to coordinate enforcement activity across all IRS activities, including cryptocurrency enforcement. The panel will discuss recent fraud enforcement and collection efforts involving cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (“NFTs”) and what tax practitioners should know moving forward. Participants will include new IRS Commissioner for SB/SE Collections Darren Guillot, the new Director of OFE Damon Rowe, the new IRS Counsel for OFE Carolyn Schenck, and Michelle Schwerin of Capes Sokol in St. Louis.
