We are excited to announce that John van Loben Sels has joined Sideman & Bancroft as a Partner, bringing his extensive experience in intellectual property, commercial, and business litigation to our firm.

John is a seasoned litigator who has handled complex disputes in federal and state courts across the United States, as well as in arbitration and administrative tribunals. His practice focuses on intellectual property matters, including patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and copyright litigation. Additionally, he represents clients in high-stakes commercial disputes involving securities laws, contract interpretation, and fiduciary obligations.

John began his legal career in Dallas, Texas, before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998, where he expanded his practice to reflect the evolving IP landscape of Silicon Valley. His deep understanding of business and technology litigation has made him a trusted advocate for clients navigating complex legal challenges. Beyond litigation, John is a frequent speaker on IP and litigation topics in Taiwan and China, sharing his insights with the global legal community.

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his law degree cum laude and served as an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal, John also holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Civil Engineering from Stanford University. Before practicing law, he served as a captain in the United States Air Force, overseeing major construction projects throughout the Far East and earning two Air Force Commendation Medals.
