Sideman & Bancroft Partner Kelly McCarthy Receives International Trademark Association Volunteer Service Award

SAN FRANCISCO, October 15, 2009 — The International Trademark Association (INTA) will present Sideman & Bancroft LLP partner Kelly McCarthy with the 2009 Volunteer Service Award for the Advancement of the Association at its annual Leadership Meeting on Nov. 11. One of just eight recipients, the award recognizes McCarthy for her six years of dedicated volunteer service to the organization and its cause. She is a member of INTA’s Academics Subcommittee of the Membership Services Committee and serves as chair of the Student Membership Project Team.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by INTA, one of the most respected professional associations in the global trademark community,” said Ellen Kahn, Sideman & Bancroft’s managing partner. “Kelly is a great talent in this evolving area of law, and her collaboration in promoting and advancing trademark rights alongside some of the other top talent in the field is a great experience that will continue to benefit Kelly and her clients for years to come.”

As a partner at Sideman & Bancroft, McCarthy focuses her practice on brand protection issues and trademark and copyright portfolio management. She advises individuals and public and private, domestic and international companies on a wide range of issues, including product and corporate name selection, trademark availability and clearance, worldwide branding strategies and prosecution of U.S. trademark applications. McCarthy also counsels clients in issues relating to intellectual property and commercial transactions. Before joining Sideman & Bancroft, she was Of Counsel at Tomlinson Zisko LLP.

McCarthy serves on the Board of Directors for the San Francisco Intellectual Property Association and is the author of “Enabling American High-Tech Companies to Protect Their Secrets Abroad: A Comparative Analysis of Irish and American Trade Secret Regulation,” published in the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review.

In addition to volunteering with INTA, McCarthy is an active fundraiser for the Peninsula Humane Society/SPCA in San Mateo, Calif. and is a member of the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (2001) and her B.A., cum laude, from Loyola Marymount University (1998).

INTA is a not-for-profit membership association of more than 5,900 trademark owners and professionals, from more than 190 countries, dedicated to the support and advancement of trademarks and related intellectual property.
